Description of the research program

With recent advances in semiconductor technology, it is now possible to efficiently design an increasing number of signal processing functions required for the real-time implementation of multimedia tasks. However, the quest for new approaches leading to higher-performance custom and semi-custom designs in terms of accuracy, speed, power, area, and functionality continues. The objective of this research program is to investigate new techniques for the design of high-performance ASICs and FPGAs and the implementation of signal processing algorithms required for multimedia communication systems. Specifically, this research targets the design and implementation of (a) algorithms and architectures for the online computation of discrete wavelets, Fourier, sine, cosine, and Hartley transforms, (b) pipelined FIR DA-RNS and adaptive LMS filters, and (c) a low-power adaptive Viterbi decoder based on a systolic array.
