Description of the research program

The objective is to study and propose new devices and architectures for high-speed and energy-efficient data communication within high-performance computing platforms such as data centers and computer clusters. In recent years, bandwidth density requirements have rapidly increased with the advancement of multi-core processors. The interconnection between shared elements such as processors and shared memory elements has become a bottleneck to achieve better performance. The project explores off-chip network interfaces based on the development of silicon-integrated photonic devices for low-power interconnection. The project also investigates the potential of plasmonic technology for on-chip and off-chip data communications towards hybrid interconnects for more energy-proportional computing. At the architecture level, the project jointly investigates optical interconnects and error-correcting electrical coding for low-cost and high-bandwidth hardware implementation.
